What does "Spanish Immersion" mean?

The Immersion method has been proven to be the most effective way to learn a foreign language. At Dayton International School, the language of instruction is Spanish. Students are immersed in the words and sounds of the Spanish language from the first day. All subjects (i.e. Math, Science, Social Studies, Literacy, etc.) are taught in Spanish.

Does my child have to know Spanish already?

No. Your child will have the opportunity to become bilingual. Prior knowledge of the language is certainly beneficial, but not required.

Won't my child have trouble understanding the teacher?

No. Our bilingual teachers use specific techniques to make sure every child understands and is able to participate. Amazingly, over the course of the first two or three months students absorb enough of the new language to start using it.  Although their active vocabulary is still very small, children will be able to understand most verbal communication.

How big are the classes?

Small class size is vital to individualized instruction. Our K - 2 class will have approximately 16 students, with two teachers.

How long is the school day?

Preschool and Kindergarten options are full-day or half-day; higher grades are full day programs, five days per week.

What about the transition to another school?

Research has shown that children who are bilingual surpass their monolingual peers in cognitive abilities. Bilingual children tend to learn to read and write faster, and they typically have better problem solving skills. In general, children will be ahead academically when they transfer to other schools.

Will there be instruction in English?

Based on the experiences in Canadian and U.S. immersion schools, it is most beneficial to introduce English as a unique subject after at least two years of foreign language immersion. This gives students the opportunity to become proficient in the second language and has shown no adverse effects on English language development.

Where is the school located?

This year the school rents space at 7811 Mad River Road. We are in the process of searching for a larger property for the 2013/2014 school year. At that time, we will be offering Kindergarten through Forth grade. The new location will also be in the South Dayton area with easy access from I-675 and I-75.

Whose idea was this anyway?

Dayton International School was created because parents and teachers saw their children's incredible progress at Lingua Language Academy, a local language school for children. A survey of the parents suggested an overwhelming desire to continue the foreign language education as an alternative to public and private grade schools.
